Introduction | T-complex polypeptide-1 (TCP1) is a ~60 kDa protein that is constitutively expressed in almost all eukaryotic cells and is upregulated during spermatogenesis. It is found in the cytosol as a subunit of hetero-oligomeric chaperone proteins, and it is known to be involved in the folding of actin and tubulin. The protein family called chaperones plays a role in identifying and stabilizing peptide intermediates during folding, assembly and disassembly, and has many characteristics with heat shock protein 70 (HSP 70), including high abundance, environmental stress induction and ATPase activity. The chaperone protein family includes mitochondrial HSP60, E. coli GroEL, plastid Rubisco subunit binding protein and archaeal protein TF55. The TCP1 sequence has nearly 40% identity with TF55, but the similarity with HSP60 and GroEL is extremely low. |
