Product Overview | Ubiquitin is a highly conserved 76 amino acid protein with an estimated molecular weight of 8.56 kDa, which plays a central role in regulating protein degradation. It is a protein modifier that can be covalently linked to the target lysine as a monomer or as a lysine-linked polymer. Depending on the lysine used for assembly, several types of polymer chains can be formed. Attaching to proteins as polymers will cause them to be degraded by 26S proteosome; a complex multi-catalytic cytosolic and nuclear protease. Polymers attached as monomers or as alternatives to proteins will not cause proteasome degradation and may be required for many functions, including maintenance of color structure, gene expression regulation, stress response, ribosome biogenesis, and DNA repair. Ubiquitin is synthesized as a polyubiquitin precursor with precise head-to-tail repeats, and the number of repeats varies with species and strains. In some species, there is a final amino acid after the last repetition, which is cysteine in cattle. Some ubiquitin genes contain a single copy of ubiquitin fused to ribosomal protein (L40 or S27a). |
